Helpful Information for Uninsured Persons or Persons Losing Medical Coverage at Work
For so many, obtaining legal relief for a claim of injury requires reasonable medical care to be obtained from the date of injury and this care may not be available to everyone. Access to medical care is an issue to discuss with our office. Other resources to obtain information about available medical services are summarized below and you should contact the specific agency as needed for further information.
Medicaid /Title 19 –
What is it? A program funded by state and federal money that provides medical and mental healthcare.
Who qualifies? This is available to U.S. citizens or qualified legal aliens that are Iowa residents with a social security number and whom meet certain income limits. Select low income groups covered include: children under 18, pregnant women, blind or disabled persons, those over 65 with limited income, and women needing breast or cervical cancer treatment who were diagnosed through early detection.
How do I apply? Go to your county department of Human Services office to apply. Polk County’s Department of Human Services is located at 1200 University Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50314 or 515-281-6899/800-972-9562 or www.dhs.state.ia.us
HIPP – Health Insurance Premium Payment
What is it? A program that helps you get new or keep insurance policies you may already have by paying the premiums for you.
Who qualifies? Persons already on Medicaid who already have current insurance or have the ability to get it through an employer. The state decides if it will be cheaper for them to pay for your current coverage or route your bills through the Medicaid policy itself. Family members not already on Medicaid can be covered through HIPP.
How do I apply? 888-346-9562 or hipp@dhs.state.ia.us
Iowa Care
What is it? Limited coverage for those who don’t qualify for Medicaid to get some inpatient/outpatient hospital coverage and limited dental services. Iowa Cares charges a monthly premium based on income and treatment must be at one of the state hospitals, Broadlawns or University of Iowa.
Who qualifies? Low income; application must be made
How do I apply? 515-725-1003 or www.dhs.state.ia.us
Free Clinics of Iowa
What is it? A free clinic operating during certain hours only made up of volunteer staff that are supported through donations from all sources.
Who qualifies? Everyone.
How do I apply? No application necessary, just go to the clinic. For locations contact 515-271-1642 or info@freeclinicsofiowa.org
